The Ninth Commandment, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16), calls God’s people to protect both the truth and others’ reputations. In 1 Kings 21, Ahab’s selfish desire and Jezebel’s use of false witnesses to condemn Naboth reveal how violating this commandment destroys innocent lives and corrupts an entire community. The false witness and mischaracterization of Naboth challenge us to recognize that bearing false witness isn’t limited to outright lies; it also includes gossip, half-truths, slander, assumptions, and any words that cause others to believe what may not be true. God calls His people to be guardians of truth who love their neighbors enough to protect their dignity and reputation. Today we will discuss the weight of words and how they impact us and our neighbors.
