The Pharisees wanted a sign from Jesus, not because their heart was postured to receive Him, but because they wanted another reason to reject Him. In this text, Jesus uses the example of Jonah to draw a contrast between the Ninevites and the Pharisees. Both have received signs, both have heard the messages, yet only one group repented. We have a greater sign than the Ninevites had, yet sometimes, our hearts are not postured to receive it. The parallels between Jonas’s life and Jesus‘ ministry are evident. Knowing that we have received a greater message than the Ninevites, the question we must ask is, “Are our hearts ready to receive it?”
